The Colt 45 Peacemaker was one of the most popular guns in the old west & is affectionately known as ‘"The Gun That Won the West".

Today examples of the gun are among the most sought after & valuable item coveted by collectors all over the world. The most valuable are the Nettleton & OWA Single Action Army Colts. These original guns regularly sell for in access of $10,000.

These Single Action Army OWA Colts were so called because is was Orville W. Ainsworth who had the job of inspecting them during their production.

It would have been Orville W. Ainsworth who would have been responsible for inspecting the Cults that saw action with 7th Cavalry lead by Col. G.A. Custer's at the battle of Little Bighorn.

This key battle in which the peacemaker was used was also known as the Battle of the Greasy Grass by the Lakota and other Plains Indians & is commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand.

Interestingly however while the Colt 45 peacemaker was standard issue for the 7th Cavalry, Col. Custer himself used a pair of English built Bull dog revolvers in place of the peacemaker on the day of the battle.

Alongside the OWA Colts those guns inspected by Henry Nettleton around 1878 at the Springfield Armory are also highly prized by serious collectors.

Both the OWA & Henry Nettleton inspected Colts feature a cartouche (OWA or HN) on the left side of the gun’s wood grip providing clue as to the guns worth to collectors.

The Colt 45 Peacemaker was also favoured by the famous British adventurer& soldier T.E. Lawrence ("of Arabia") had a special fondness for this weapon. Having been attacked by an Arab bandit in Mesopotamia who stole his gun Lawrence’s life was saved because the attacker was unable to work out how the mechanism of the revolver worked. After that encounter Lawrence kept a Colt 45 peacemaker to hand for good luck.
