The Pigface Basinet Helmet 14th - 15th Century Fully wearable and an excellent item for re-enactment or would make a great addition to any collection. Comes with an ajustable leather interior section to suit different head sizes The Pigface Basinet Helmet The name comes from the pointed snout / visor. The pointed top and front were great at deflecting blows from an attacker's weapons. This helmet gives good visibility and provides great protection. This is an outstanding quality reproduction helmet made from 16 gauge steel with a polished finish, and the brass fitting make it an attractive piece over the plain version. The front section is hinged and lifts up to expose the face. This item is shipped to you pre-oiled for protection. Close attention to quality is a top priority in every piece. Evolving in the latter part of the 14th century as an effort to solve the cumbersome nature of the Great helm and the lack of protection of the Spangen helm, this helm sported a visor which projected very strongly in a point and was therefore named the "pigface" or "dogface" basinet. The full coif of chainmail was shortened to an "aventail" and was suspended from the bottom of the helm to guard the neck.
